How to Land your Dream Teaching Job

Being a teacher is one of the most fulfilling jobs in the world. There is just so much gratification in knowing that you are able to share knowledge and affect people’s lives in a positive way. Do you want to become a teacher? Here are six simple ways on how to land your dream teaching job.

1. Study, study, study

First of all, you need to earn a teaching degree. For undergraduate courses, you can earn a degree through the Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Arts, or Bachelor of Science. Take note that a degree in Arts or Science will require you to take the QTS or the Qualified Teacher Status program. For post graduate courses, you can earn a Post Graduate Certificate of Education, School-Centred Initial Teacher Training, Graduate Teacher Programme, Registered Teacher Programme, and the Overseas Trained Teacher Programme.

2. Start job hunt early

School year in the UK starts in September. This means that you should begin browsing through available teaching positions and handing out your resume as early as July or August. Don’t wait until it’s September before you start with the application process. By this time, all the positions would have been filled out already.

3. Set your goals

Determine what specific kind of teaching job you want for yourself. Do you want to teach pre-school, middle school, or high school? Or do you prefer special education? Look for job positions that are suitable to your preference.

4. Hand out perfect resumes

Don’t be satisfied with a resume that you only checked or proofread once. Aside from being 100% sure that your resume is free from any grammar or spelling mistakes, you should also check for accuracy of details. Remember, employers conduct background checking and if you make an honest mistake in your educational or employment history, it may appear that you’ve committed resume falsification, which is more than enough grounds to terminate your application.

5. Create a unique cover letter

One of the biggest mistakes you can commit as an applicant is to write generic cover letter or make use of template cover letter. Yes, it takes time to write an original and professional cover letter but it would be worth it since employers are always on the lookout for cover letters that stand out.

6. Always make a good impression

Whether it’s during the interview, meeting, or any other process before and after you’re hired, always strive to make a good impression. Teachers cannot afford to appear unprofessional. Always be on time and dress professionally. Be sure to ask only intelligent questions. Impress the school superiors with your skills, intellect, and everything that you can offer. Don’t just be concerned about the things that you say but also with how you act and talk. When you talk to interviewers, make eye contact. Talk in a smart but sincere and warm way.

Finding the teaching job of your dreams is very easy. What’s difficult is getting it. Be sure to follow these tips so you’ll be closer to getting that dream teaching job you’ve always wanted.
